In a world where Bix Beiderbecke music is constantly in the background, many seemingly unrelated townsfolk are brought together in this politically-minded mini-series. Planet-conscious English teacher, Jill Swinburne, leaves her husband and starts ‘carsharing' with her colleague, Geordie Trevor Chaplin, a jazz-enthousiast, football-loving woodwork teacher. But when a beautiful local, raising funds for the Cubs' football team, knocks on Chaplin's door, they are unwittingly drawn into a black economy intrigue involving ‘tradesmen' Big Al and Little Norm and the seemingly incompetent Sergeant Hobson.
