Well-off Al and Davina Jackson seem to be perfectly established in London's chattering classes. As a columnist for a broadsheet newspaper Al gets paid to criticise the world, while Davina tries to beautify it through her job at an art gallery. But life is never neat and tidy... Even at the age of 60 the couple and their friends find themselves battling the same old problems of sexual temptation and professional anxiety. Then there's Orlando, their 30 year-old son, who is still stuck in an extended adolescence. If only the Jacksons could be more like Davina's always in control sister, Veronica, and her ideal husband Roger.
